Will Android’s “Ice Cream Sandwich” Melt Under Apple Pressure?

Between Google’s Android powered devices and Apple’s coveted iPhone – it seems like there has been a serious power struggle in the smartphone industry lately. With other competitors falling flat (the Windows phone never stood a chance), Apple and Google have been trying to out-do one another with every new release.

Recently, rumors have been swirling about a new Android OS nicknamed “Ice Cream Sandwich”. The multi-functional system will be able to run across smartphones and tablets alike – but the first phone running the coveted new technology was scheduled to be released in late 2011. However, with rumors of the Apple iPhone 5 release date swirling, Google has reportedly looked into altering the release date.

Apple’s newest handset will likely dominate the market, leaving the competitors in its shadow. Sure there are a handful of loyal Android users who will line up to purchase the company’s newest innovation, but is it enough to keep Android afloat in a predominately Steve Jobs-dominated world? An earlier release date may help Google generate the buzz it needs prior to the mania that will certainly surround the release of the newest iPhone. Hype has already been created over a new design, enhanced cameras, and other “top-secret” alterations to Apple’s newest generation of telephone technology.

While the Apple release date has not been verified yet, one would assume that the company would be interested in getting the device out prior to the pivotal holiday season. While that could be anywhere within the October – November time frame, Google is said to be looking at an October launch for Ice Cream Sandwich.

At this point, it may be a race to the finish. If Android’s newest OS can provide users with the power, speed, and productivity they need – the iPhone 5 may have some serious competition on its hands. If not? Looks like it will be another win in the books for Mr. Jobs.
